Feedback on the Lenovo Thinkpad T420s, screen displays white lines

Asked by Alexander Boyd

I've installed Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit Server onto my ThinkPad T420s. Installation works fine, and when I go to boot into my newly-installed system, grub comes up fine; once I select Ubuntu from the list, however, a few things are printed out and then the screen goes completely black, except for the right third of the screen which is filled with vertical white lines. I've let it sit like this for ten minutes and nothing happens.

The same thing happens when installing Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop.

Changing the graphics mode to "discrete graphics" in the BIOS seems to work around the problem reliably.

Hi Alexander,

It sounds like it's the case that this system has hybrid graphics (i.e. onboard Intel graphics and a discrete, maybe NVidia, graphics card). This particular configuration is not considered certified, but it's also nice to know that tweaking the BIOS settings can achieve a working setup.

Thanks!
