Feedback on the Dell PowerEdge R710

Asked by Aarti Desai

I just tried to install ubuntu-11.04-server several times on a Dell Power Edge R710 Server - and failed. THe error we are getting is as follows: cdrom/pool/main/u/util-linux/bsutils_2.17.2-9 ubuntu4_amd64.deb was corrupt.

We downloaded the installer from http://www.ubuntu.com/certification/hardware/200905-2781

Our system configuration is as follows:
Intel(R) Quad Core E5506 Xeon(R) PU,2.13GHz, 4M Cache – 2 No
4.86 GT/s QPI 1TB 7.2K RPM SATA 3.5 "Hard Drive Hotplug- 6 No.
RAM - 128GB

Any help in this regard is greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Aarti

Most likely, you either got a bad burn if you made an actual CD, or you got a bad ISO download. Did you compare the md5sum for the iso you downloaded to the md5sums published online?

http://releases.ubuntu.com/natty/

Try downloading the image again. Once you've done that, check the md5sum for that image.
To do so, download both the ISO image for Ubuntu Server 11.04, and the file MD5SUMS.txt (you'll see both in the listings at the bottom of that page).

Download them into the same directory and check them like this:

md5sum -c MD5SUMS.txt

you'll see output similar to the following:

bladernr@klaatu:~/Downloads$ md5sum -c MD5SUMS.txt
md5sum: ubuntu-11.04-alternate-amd64.iso: No such file or directory
ubuntu-11.04-alternate-amd64.iso: FAILED open or read
md5sum: ubuntu-11.04-alternate-i386.iso: No such file or directory
ubuntu-11.04-alternate-i386.iso: FAILED open or read
md5sum: ubuntu-11.04-desktop-amd64.iso: No such file or directory
ubuntu-11.04-desktop-amd64.iso: FAILED open or read
md5sum: ubuntu-11.04-desktop-i386.iso: No such file or directory
ubuntu-11.04-desktop-i386.iso: FAILED open or read
ubuntu-11.04-server-amd64.iso: FAILED
md5sum: ubuntu-11.04-server-i386.iso: No such file or directory
ubuntu-11.04-server-i386.iso: FAILED open or read
md5sum: wubi.exe: No such file or directory
wubi.exe: FAILED open or read
md5sum: WARNING: 6 of 7 listed files could not be read
md5sum: WARNING: 1 of 1 computed checksum did NOT match

You'll notice that I had 6 of 7 failed because the files did not exist, and one failed because the checksum didn't match. \

Alternatively, you can verify manually by doing this:

md5sum filename.iso

and compare the output of that command to what is in the MD5SUMS.txt file.

Hi,
We downloaded the server iso from the link that you sent and checked the md5sum for that image. Following is the output that we get

[root@labserverdell1 data]# md5sum -c MD5SUMS.txt
md5sum: ubuntu-11.04-alternate-amd64.iso: No such file or directory
ubuntu-11.04-alternate-amd64.iso: FAILED open or read
md5sum: ubuntu-11.04-alternate-i386.iso: No such file or directory
ubuntu-11.04-alternate-i386.iso: FAILED open or read
md5sum: ubuntu-11.04-desktop-amd64.iso: No such file or directory
ubuntu-11.04-desktop-amd64.iso: FAILED open or read
md5sum: ubuntu-11.04-desktop-i386.iso: No such file or directory
ubuntu-11.04-desktop-i386.iso: FAILED open or read
ubuntu-11.04-server-amd64.iso: OK
ubuntu-11.04-server-i386.iso: OK
md5sum: wubi.exe: No such file or directory
wubi.exe: FAILED open or read
md5sum: WARNING: 5 of 7 listed files could not be read.

Does this mean that the download is OK?

Thanks,
Aarti

Aarti,

It seems to be saying it's okay. Can you also, just to make sure run 'md5sum ubuntu-11.04-server-amd64.iso' and copy the output here?

Hi Aarti,

Yeah, that's right - so I'm puzzled now. If the ISO itself is not corrupt, may the physical media is. Have you used a CD or a USB stick?

I'm confused... if you have already installed 11.04 on the server, why do you need to boot from the CD? Does the server boot at all? What happens when you try to boot? How far does it get? Where does it stop?

Also, while we don't mind trying to help you sort this out via this forum, Answers is not really a good support channel. There are only a couple of us who monitor these messages.

You may also wish to post your questions and problems on AskUbuntu[1] or the Ubuntu Forums[2]. Additionally, if you'd like real support from Canonical, check out Ubuntu Advantage[3]

As I said, we don't mind trying to help you out, but there are better ways to get support that you could use in addition to this venue.
