First thing to do would be to verify that the CD imgae you have is good. I've seen reports of install problems from people which really turned out to be bad ISO images.

The next step would be putting the ISO on a usb stick and booting from that (assuming you have verified that the ISO is good) and retrying the install.

Also, some questions:

Are you booting into the live environment and then selecting "Install Ubuntu" or some other method? (Hint: when you boot and get the screent that has the little man and keyboard at the bottom, hit escape and you'll get a boot menu where you select your language and then you can select Install Ubuntu directly without actually going into the live environment.

To verify the CD image, open a terminal and run 'md5sum <path to ISO>', then compare the hash given to the one in this file - http://releases.ubuntu.com/maverick/MD5SUMS (for 10.10 Desktop 64bit your hash should be 1b9df87e588451d2ca4643a036020410)

thanks for the help here
I've md5summed the iso and that was good. Right now i falled back to 10.04.2 lts 64b and that was booting just fine, so for now i'm installing 10.04.2 lts 64b. After that i'll try to upgrade to 10.10.

Didn't try the 'esc' option :( didn't know 'bout that.
I'll report back if 10.04.2 lts 64b is up and running, but for now i think it's going to install
