installed LAMP but need to copy files from HD to VD

Asked by lostinwoods

I was using free ftp server to build my Drupal based website. But it was very slow in terms of testing and deleting stuff. So I came across Turnkey which is GR8.

It installed well and says it works when checking localhost in firefox. But my problem is that I want to copy folder on my HD to Turnkey VD. I don't know how to do that and filemanager in webmin is not very helpful either. Kindly help.

I'm using Ubuntu 9.04.

You can setup a shared folder in VirtualBox so that a directory in your Ubuntu host will show up inside the virtual disk. However this isn't really as easy as it should be. By far the easiest way to transfer files in and out of the appliance is to use file transfer client that supports SFTP. TurnKey Linux appliances provide SFTP (via SSH) by default.

I think Nautilus (Ubuntu's file explorer) supports sftp by putting an address like this in the location bar:

sftp://username@1.2.3.4/

For those using Windows there are a ton of nice file transfer clients out there that support SFTP. See the SFTP article on Wikipedia.

Cheers,
Liraz

Thank you Liraz for this answer. It works well. At first I was not able to do it but with in mind about Linux structure its easy to do it. I'm moving away from Windows culture thus require a bit more hard work.
