tpfan Control temperature settings

Asked by John in SF

I have installed the ThinkPad Fan Control application on my X31 using the following directions.
1-
http://ppa.launchpad.net/surban/ubuntu/pool/main/t/tpfand/tpfand_0.91-ubuntu1_all.deb
2-
http://ppa.launchpad.net/surban/ubuntu/pool/main/t/tpfan-admin/tpfan-admin_0.91-ubuntu1_all.deb

Now that this is installed and I can access the TPFan Control from System/Administration, I do not know what to set the sensor settings to or how to confirm that the fan is in fact working. (I dont hear the fan and how do I take its temperature? )

I have downloaded the latest fan profiles to the directory suggested but I do not know how to select one for use with TPFC.

Could someone offer some direction to a very new user of Ubuntu 8.04 on an IBM X31 26725KU?

The temperatures of the sensors are shown in the upper half of tpfan-admin. In the lower right corner the status of the fan is shown. (level and speed)

If you do not know how to configure the trigger points of the sensors, then do not use tpfan. The embedded controller of your ThinkPad will turn on the fan when needed, however many people are annoyed by the noise of the fan and prefer to configure fan trigger temperatures manually.

I was never witness to the fan working without this TPFAN application running on my IBM X31. This is why I downloaded this application in the first place.

1. I understand the point of TPFAN and I understand the temperature settings.
2. I have changed the 2 sensor settings to a lower temperature so the fan will kick on sooner (CPU and HDD) but the fan does not come on even with the settings changed.
3. What I do not understand is why the fan does not start with lower settings.

Since you offer no instructions on the various settings available for each sensor (Off, interval, 10%, 15%, 20%, etc.) or the profiles you sent, I am left to uninstall this application.

Thanks.

I have exactly the same experience with my X31 and Ubuntu. The fan behaviour is rather inconsistent, and although it does come on from time to time it feels much hotter than when running under Windows. I understand that the cooling of the laptop should be OS independent, but it doesn't seem to be. That's why I use Tpfan - it is far more consistent with trigger temps.

I would agree with John that the admin interface is a little difficult to understand at first. Very comprehensive though!
