Playing recordings - codec problem in totem

Asked by Rowan

Ubuntu 10.04 2.6.32-21 plus restricted extras and w23codecs
Me-Tv 1.1.2

When playing back the recorded mpeg files in totem - it asks for a codec but can't find it.
If you select cancel when it asks to search, it plays the file but you can't scroll through the video.
Not much of a problem as vlc plays them - no problem - but might confuse inexperienced Ubuntu users.
They would expect an app on their pc to make recordings that would play back with the default media player.

Output from terminal:
$ totem --play /media/sdb6/Buzzcocks.mpeg
** Message: Missing plugin: gstreamer|0.10|totem|private/x-dvbsub decoder|decoder-private/x-dvbsub (private/x-dvbsub decoder)

Not sure if this is an Ubuntu/Totem problem or Me-TV recording problem - any ideas Michael?

I think that what you are trying to say is that you have an issue with totem because its handling of unknown streams is a little cumbersome for novice users. In this case, the teletext stream in the MPEG2 TS format file is not recognised by GStreamer which reports it as a warning. Totem subsequently presents this as a dialog for the user to action. I guess that it would be nice if there was some way to ignore certain streams.

Terribly sorry, your case is obviously about a subtitle stream in the file, not a teletext one. I usually have the same problem with totem and teletext streams.

One more comment, I don't think that it's fair on the users to remove these streams from the recording because people use them in other players.

No worries Michael - I will just change the file properties so this file always opens with vlc.
I agree - we should not remove subtitle streams!
