Manual sort

Asked by Viola Neve

I just installed TaskCoach, Mac, 1.4.1, and I'm trying to manual sort to work with no luck. (I'm going off the indication from August that all the latest versions support drag-and-drop ordering, from here: http://bit.ly/1GottpL .)

If I click and drag a task, it gives me visual feedback that seems to me like it's going to move the task: I see a ghostly, hovering version of the task name that follows my mouse, and if I drag it between two other tasks, where I want it to go, a black line indicating where I am shows up, and a tool tip that says the name of the task nearest it. However, while it will let me drag and drop it *inside* another task and turn it into a subtask, it won't let me drag and drop it *in between* two other tasks just to change the order, and I've googled to try and figure out what I'm doing wrong without much luck.

So right now I have:

O 3
O 2
O 1

If I click and drag 1 onto 2, I get:

O 3
O 2
    O 1

with 1 as a subtask of 2. However, if instead I click and drag 1 instead above 3, where my tooltip says "O|3", nothing happens and I still have:

O 3
O 2
O 1

Same thing if I try to drag 1 in between 2 and 3, either where the tooltip says "O|3" or where it says "O|2". I can't move the tasks 2 or 3, either, not to any position other than as a subtask. I tried deleting the tasks and starting over, I tried restarting the app several times, I tried *reinstalling* the app, I tried Shift-drag and Command-drag just for kicks... no go. Am I completely missing something? This seems like it should be pretty straightforward.

Under View → Sort, "Manual ordering" is checked. So is "Ascending" — I'm not sure what that does when you have manual ordering turned on, so I clicked it to see if I could uncheck it, but nothing happened.

In case anyone else runs into this and is equally baffled, I finally found the setting (which didn't come pre-enabled on mine, though manual sort did): in the line of column headings at the top of the task window, you have to right-click or control-click to show all the various columns you can show, and show the "Manual Sort" column. Then you can click and drag on the icons in the manual sort column to move things up and down within a folder (but not nest them). Clicking and dragging on the task name will still let you nest items, but will not let you sort them.
