Inconsistency with version numbering?

Asked by Paul Wortmann

I am a big fan of Tagaini Jisho, and don't want to complain, but it seems there is an inconsistency with your version numbering.
I post here as I feel many a user my be experiencing a similar state of confusion.
Why is it that when I want to download "Tagaini Jisho 0.9.0b2" it displays "tagainijisho-0.8.85-xx.exe".
https://launchpad.net/tagaini-jisho/devel/0.9.0b2
I have tried to find a download of a file including the version "0.9.0b2" but I cant seem to locate it.
The release date on the latest download being at only 23 hours indicates that it may in fact be the latest build.
It also seems that your code repository on this site is also out of date, so I cant download the source and compile it myself either.
Don't get me wrong, I am very grateful for your excellent application, and your hard work and effort that has gone into making it.
I just feel that if you build numbers match the provided downloads it would be less confusing for everyone, especially new users.

Thanks again for your wonderful application.
Paul.

Hi,

Thanks for your appreciation of Tagaini. Actually, I understand your
concerns with the version numbering scheme. Although it can seem
weird, is was 100% intentional.

The reason is that this allows the update notification system to
compare version numbers much more easily. For instance, characters
string comparison tells that 0.8.85 is inferior to 0.9.0, but that
0.9.0 in inferior to 0.9.0b2 (while the contrary should be true for
consistency).

So I decided to employ an internal versioning using this scheme, where
.7x denotes an alpha, .8x a beta and .9x a release candidate, while at
the same time using the more intuitive alpha, beta, and rc notation
for end-users. My mistake is that the internal numbering scheme is
also used in file names and in the about dialogs, where the more
user-friendly notation should be computed and employed. Your post made
me realize this and I'll try to use the correct notation in the
future.

Can you help with this problem?
