Ability to better tune system to improve live performance?

Asked by GMaq

Hi. I am using systemback for preliminary testing of a new distribution base for a distro I maintain called AV Linux and am moving from my current base of Debian 6.0 to Debian 8.0. Systemback does it's intended job perfectly however for lowlatency audio-centric performance purposes I require some extra kernel boot parameters ie ( 'threadirqs' 'transparent_hugepage=never') and it would be nice to be able to select the 'noatime' parameter in the live created fstab. I realize the created ISO's can be broken open and configs changed in the created ISO filesystem but that is time consuming and clumsy. Would you consider a feature request to enable adding kernel boot parameters and fstab changes for advanced users within the live system creation settings? I would be willing to support and sponsor this feature if you are willing to look into it.. Thanks very much again for all your work on Systemback and for the recent fixes and improvements..

I will be thinking about the possibilities. Now I am a little busy with some optimizations. Please wait in a few days.

I've been thinking it over. The basic problem is that the default kernel parameters ('GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT') are not used when creating a Live system. Now I'm going to change this. So if the currently running system is contained the 'threadirqs' and 'transparent_hugepage=never' parameters, the Live will also include these by default.

The default mount option is the 'relatime', but you are right, I change this to 'noatime'. This is good for SSD's, and atimes normally are not needed.

The version 1.2.1 will contains these changes.

If you want, please test the changes with Systemback daily builds (bzr207+, ppa:nemh/systemback-daily). I plan to release the new stable version on this Sunday.

Hi Kendek,

This is great! I didn't imagine it would be so quickly implemented! I will not have time to fully test until later in the weekend anyway so Sunday is perfect plus being on Debian it is easier to not use the PPA. I will gladly test and give further feedback. I will also make a donation in appreciation for your attention and response to this feature request. Thanks very much!

Please apologize, but the new stable version (1.2.1) will be delayed a bit. I try to implement a new feature for btrfs filesystems and unfortunately I'm not done yet. :-(

Hi,

Please don't apologize, there is no hurry here, after all you can't rush perfection :). I will look forward to it whenever it arrives..

Ok. If all goes well (I'm running tests), I will release the new version on tomorrow evening. :-)

Can you help with this problem?
