what is the 'yum search' analogue on debian?

how do I search for a package by keyword?
on fedora:
if a package is installed, I would do "rpm -qa | grep foo".
if a package is NOT installed, I would do "yum search foo" (actually, the latter would work for both installed and not installed packages).
what do I do on debian/ubuntu?
yes, I know about dpkg and apt-get.
yes, I did RTFM.
no, I am NOT interested in GUI.

aptitude search foo

For installed and not uninstalled package names.

aptitude search --help for more options or just aptitude --help
