CD drive not working?

Hi.

Did this problem occur after recently upgrading to, of freshly installing, Gutsy(7.10)?

When I go under Places >CD ROM 1, I get the message "Unable to mount the selected volume" and details "mount: special device /dev/scd0 does not exist". This is the CD drive that came with my System76 laptop. It won't play any CD or DVD that I've put in it, though I can hear it "spinning up".

There appears to be a bug in Update Manager that hoses sound in some computers and sound + cd drives in others.
We've came up with a good way to restore sound. Unfortunately, at the moment the only permanent fix we have found is a re-install.

Please follow these directions exactly:
1. Back up important files. I do not recommend backing up any config files other than .mozilla and .gaim.

2. You must re-install Ubuntu. Any install CD is fine, but I have had the best results with the alternate CD.

3. REFORMAT your partitions when you get to that step of the install, and I do not recommend keeping your current home directory. Re-create it from scratch. Failure to REFORMAT ALL PARTITIONS has been linked to retained Feisty configurations, which can break sound, cd-drives and printing (i.e. I am recommending a 100% clean install). (See cwej's post on this thread for motivation to not try to shortcut a clean install ;)

4. Once you have re-installed, remove the install cd listing from your sources file. To do this, go to a terminal and enter this command:
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
In the resulting file, comment out (#) the cdrom reference at the top of the page.
Click the SAVE button.

5. Update your install FROM THE COMMAND LINE. Updating with Update Manager has been linked in our shop tests to a failure to load the proper gstreamer packages. Here are the commands:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get --assume-yes dist-upgrade
sudo reboot

6. Download and install the system 76 driver with these commands:
wget http://planet76.com/repositories/system76-driver-2.1.1.deb
sudo dpkg -i system76-driver-2.1.1.deb

7. Go to System > Administration > System 76 Driver
Run the Restore function of the driver

8. Reboot the computer

Now you should have a perfect install of Gutsy.

Ummmm ... I don't have an install CD. Can I re-install using a download, or am I totally screwed?

Also, I don't have any partitions as it's a totally Linux/Ubuntu laptop. No other OS.

You can download an install cd from here:
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

The default selections will work fine for you. Just click "Start Download".
