The easiest way was if you could try to tap the Esc key repeatedly from boot, and you might be able to access the menu.

If you are unable to do so, boot up an ubuntu live cd. From there you can access the ubuntu partition and edit the file /boot/grub/menu.lst on that partition.

When sum was first run, it created a backup file as /boot/grub/menu.lst.backup
Try to copy that file back to restore the previous settings. Also it would be good if you could save a copy of the current menu.lst so I can see what went wrong.

If you need more detailed instructions, just ask.

Can you help with this problem?
