unable to update cache

Asked by Peter AB

since installing a new printer I get the following when updating the cache:

W:Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/michael-gruz/canon/ubuntu/dists/precise/main/source/Sources 404 Not Found
, W:Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/michael-gruz/canon/ubuntu/dists/precise/main/binary-i386/Packages 404 Not Found
, E:Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

How can I get rid of this and/or update my cache!

Hi Peter, and thanks for your question. You are seeing this message because there are currently no packages targeted for Precise in that PPA. The easiest way to fix this is to disable that PPA as a source. You can do this as follows:

1. Open Ubuntu Software Center and choose menu item "Edit"->"Software Sources...".
2. In the dialog that appears, choose the "Other Software" tab.
3. Search for the PPA matching your description in the list that is displayed, and uncheck the checkbox for that item.
4. Close the dialog.
5. In a terminal, type the following:

  $ sudo apt-get update

You should no longer see the "404 Not Found" messages. Please be sure to let us know if this doesn't work for you or if you encounter any other difficulties.

Thanks!
Gary
