Flattr Integration in the Software Centre

Asked by Stephen Judge

I wonder what is the possibility of looking at integrating the Flattr micro-payments/donations service into the Software Centre. I really would like to have an easy way to financially contribute to projects that are listed in the Software Centre. I tend to avoid donation services using PayPal et al as it is a bit of a tedious task. The Flattr service is very very easy, almost to easy. Once I have some funds in my Flattr account I just click on Flattr buttons anywhere across the web for things I want to support. It's like 'Liking' something but with some real monetary value.

I want to ask here first what is the best way to request consideration of this idea. Is it enough to say so here, or should I file a bug report against 'Ubuntu Software Center' as a feature request. Or is this something Canonical is already considering doing.

Hi Stephen, and thank you very much for your question/idea. The idea of building a donation system for people's favorite free software project directly into Software Center is something that we would all LOVE to see happen, and in fact, this exact idea has been discussed with much enthusiasm in the most recent UDS (and even possible the one before that). It remains high in the list of things that we would like to do.

I think that it is likely that this will again be on the agenda for Ubuntu Software Center sessions at the next UDS in Oakland, California, USA this May. Here are details for the summit.

Note that you do not need to actually attend UDS in order to participate effectively. For one, you can monitor the sessions as they are scheduled and developed at this site, and you are free and very much encouraged to add suggestions there at any time. It's an open process and all good ideas are welcomed and appreciated. This website is the central place to go to watch and help influence the plans for the next set of new features for Ubuntu Software Center, and of course, for all of Ubuntu.

I hoep this has been helpful! If you'd like, I can provide more information as needed, just ask here. Or feel free to contact me directly at any time.

Cheers,
Gary

What was the outcome of the UDS session?
I think this idea could now be interesting for Canonical/Ubuntu too, because yesterday Flattr announced their "Partner Revenue Share" program. So this could be another way for Canonical to make money:

Can you help with this problem?
