Add/Modify launchers

How can I add or modify the launchers that show up in Slingshot. I can remove them using Alacarte, but it isn't able to add new launchers or modify existing ones.
Iit would be ideal if there was a GUI app for this, but modifying .desktop files will do the job too, but I just don't know where to find them.
