Laptop-mode-tools is really deprecated ?

Asked by Olivier Parent Colombel

Hi,

In the last version of samsung-tools (1.32), you're saying that laptop-mode-tools is deprecated ? Quite strange. Are you sure you aren't confusing laptop-mode-tools program and laptop mode kernel module ? I'm using archlinux and I can't find a page where it's stated that laptop-mode-tools is deprecated...

Also, you're saying that pm-utils now replaces laptop-mode-tools... but the only thing I could find about this replacement is a ubuntu package conflict and also a bug that will be fixed in natty (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/laptop-mode-tools/+bug/638307). pm-utils only manages suspend/hibernate and doesn't do nothing for power saving...

Many thanks for your great tool,
Olivier Parent

Hi,

Pm-utils also manages various power saving aspects by using hooks which are executed when the power state changes.
You can find the default installed hooks in /usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/.
In addition to those, samsung-tools installs its own hooks in /etc/pm/power.d/, in order to mimic all the needed power management functionalities previously provided by laptop-mode-tools and yet missing in pm-utils.
At the moment, samsung-tools lacks a gui to enable, disable and configure its own hooks, but this is on my TODO list. For now, the hooks are just installed and enabled by default (ie, they are installed as executabled scripts).
For more info on how pm-utils hooks work, take a look at /usr/share/doc/pm-utils/HOWTO.hooks.

Anyway, in general is a bad idea to have both pm-utils and laptop-mode-tools running at the same time, since they both try to manage the power saving in their own way and this can lead to conflicts. Since pm-utils is the new suspend and powerstate setting framework, installed by default on almost any distro out there, I completely removed laptop-mode-supports from samsung-tools in favour of it.

Thanks you, it's the first time I heard about pm-utils able to manage power saving...
