Text window opening after highlighting?

Asked by Jakob Lerner

Hello,

thank you for this great piece of software, it is definitely the best pdf reader I have tried so far!

Maybe I'm missing something, but is there a way to stop a text window from opening up after I highlight a part of the text?
Usually I do the following: I press ctrl and draw a square over the part of the text I want to highlight, then I click "add highlight" instead of "add text". But it still opens a text windo afterwards, which I have to esc out of. I don't know if that's a bug or if I missed something, but it does add a unnecessary step that somewhat bothers my work flow of just wanting to highlight.

Thank you!

Hello Jakob,

what you describe is indeed the intended behaviour, i.e. since hightlight annotations carry an editable text as well, we immediately open that pop-up so that text can be edited. You problem is probably that even there can be an additional text with a highlight, you usually do not want that? I think it should be relatively straight forward to not show the pop-up after creation, but still be able to access the text of a highlight be clicking on it explicitly. What do you think?

Best regards, Adam.

Hey Adam,

I think that would be a good idea!

It does obviously depend on how most people use the highlight feature, i.e. whether or not most people actually do add text to highlight annotations. For me, I never even thought about adding text: I highlight so that I can see the main points and the structure of an argument or article. If I wanted to write a note, I would just do that, without an additional highlight.

I would think that people who do want to add text to every one of their highlight annotations generally highlight fewer text passages compared to someone like me who uses it like this: https://i.imgur.com/atrRUSY.png

That means that it would save people like me more hassle than it would add for the other group, and we would have a net positive in usability.

Anyway, thank you for the feedback!
Jakob

Hello again,

trunk revision 1978 or later should contain the change.

Best regards, Adam.

Hello.
Sorry I open this old question, which appears marked as solved but i find the same behaviour on qpdfview 0.4.14.

"trunk revision 1978 or later should contain the change"

What does this mean, did the change (the wished feature) already came or not yet?

It seems it did not. But, if you excuse me, I ask again:

Is there a way to stop a text window from opening up after selecting "Add highlight"?

Hello Laureano,

version 0.4.14 is trunk revision 1872 which it does not contain these changes.

Best regards,
Adam
