I have loaded Qimo and upgarded to ubuntu 9.04, now I can't boot into Qimo. Only Xubuntu

Asked by Aref

I have an old pc (AMD 800MHZ, 32O MB Ram and 40 GB HDD space). I loaded Qimo for my children to use. Never got the Wiless working (USR PCI card). I have recently upgraded to Ubuntu 9.04. The system works as an Xubuntu. I wonder how to get the QIMO desktop on. I tried to log-in as Qimo but I don't know the password.
Just FYI, I am quite new to linux but got almost the whole family using it. I loaded my laptop and my wife's laptop with Ubuntu. My MAC PPC G4 and now trying to get the kids on it.

If you just upgraded to 9.04, the Qimo desktop is still on there. Upgrading changed the configuration files back to the normal Xubuntu setup, so you'll need to change the default login back to Qimo from the Login Window setting program.

The Qimo user account doesn't have a password, so once you get to the login screen, just select Qimo, or type "qimo" in the username field, and press enter when prompted for the password.

Hi there and many thanks for your prompt response.
I tried your suggestions, unfortunately did not work. I tried to get Auto log on for Qimo and the name was not in the list, I entered it manually, the system gave an error message that sounded like the user qimo does not have the credentials for auto login. I then tried to logon by typing Qimo at the logon window by not entering the PW, the system gave me a wrong password message.
I don't mind reloading Qimo, but all the updates will be lost, this took me too long to complete and I am on a volume based internet service, we don't have unlimited here. So, if there is a repair option some where that can revive the whole thing.
Thanks and regards.

It's not necessary to re-load all your updates. You can create a cd-rom of them prior to re-installing. Then when you need to do the updates, insert the cdrom and it'll read them from there rather than downloading them again.

However, it would be best to fix this problem "in place". I'll take a look at it when I'm in the office this morning and try to find a solution.

Thanks Dale appreciate your help.
If you have the steps to create the update CD, I shall try that option as well.

Try copying the file /etc/gdm/gdm.conf from the LiveCD session into /etc/gdm/gdm.conf-custom in the installation, that will hopefully get your old login settings back.
