Remove (white) background from an image

Asked by richb-hanover

I would like to be able to remove the background from an image. I regularly find images that I would like to use as icons. They often come with a solid white (or colored) background. I would like to replace the background with transparency, leaving only the icon.

I envision that it would be sufficient to use the top-left pixel as a hint of the background color. Then the program could select all of that color surrounding the icon and replace with transparent pixels (or create an alpha mask of the negative shape, or some manipulation like that.)

Is there an action (or set of actions) that would do this? Many thanks!

Hi Rich,
Nice to see that after a SPE supporter now you also become a Phatch user ;-) You can file a blueprint for this or better write this action in PIL with my support.
