What is the difference between partimage ang partimage-ng? Are they even related somehow?

The only common thing is the name. Partimage-ng is essentially a rewrite of partimage, with no compatibility for the image file format.

Long time ago, when I wanted to use partimage to create/deploy images of hard drives partimage failed to do that due to various bugs and nobody seemed to work on it any longer. I took a look at the source code and I felt that starting a new project from the ground-up would be easier that fixing partimage. That's how partimage-ng started.
