LiveCd for partimage-ng ?

Asked by snguyen

Hello guys,

I have installed with success partimage-ng Rc8 with Mandriva 2008, I've created an image of my system. Now, i want to do a test with the created image... But i don't know how to restore my test system entirely. With partimage, there're many CDs to do that, but i don't know if with partimage-ng how it is.

So, i thought that i have to boot my pc with a liveCD(like ubuntu for example), and re-install partimage-ng after with command-line. And only restore my pc after... (I haven't do it yet).

Do i have to to this or there's an other alternative ?

Thanks for your response.

I regularly run partimage-ng under the "rescue mode" of Fedora 9's installation DVD or CDROM. After booting up in rescue mode, I "simply" copy the single partimage-ng executable across the network from where I have it stored. You could also put the program on a USB flash drive or "pre-install" it on the disks you are going to backup. Once up on your "rescue mode", recueCD or liveCD system, copy the partimage-ng executable file to a ram disk so that you do not need the storage device mounted. Then execute.

You will need compatible versions of libext2fs, libntfs, and libparted on the rescue/liveCD system to the libraries available on the system you built the partimage-ng executable.

No, no updates. I'd love to have such a livecd too, but unfortunately my time for partimage-ng is limited so I'd hardly build it myself.

All you need, actually, is to get a standard live cd, install the required libraries, compile partimage-ng, and then rebuild the live cd image.

Hi there!

I've managed to build a custom debian liveUSB with staticly linked partimage-ng for this case and can share my experience if you like :)

We've got a new wiki-based site at partimage-ng.net. It'd be great you put this info on the Tips and tricks page. Let me know if you face any problems with the site.

Dmitry

Here is my initial manual http://daemon.drivesource.ru/doku.php?id=common:debian_liveusb
I think it's a good stating point.

Tips and Tricks link is not visible when I open partimage-ng.net anonymously :)
I click Discussions of Main Page and then it appears :)

I've tried different browsers from different places and I still see the Tips and tricks entry in the sidebar, regardless of viewing the page anonymously or as a user. I have no clue why it is not shown for you, sorry.
