Hello Energy,

That is a really cool video clip you have there :-)

Can you explain what it was different that you wanted to happen?

The only fault I could see was that there was an item which kept floating up in the lower left of the screen, which could be removed by applying a transition mask to that part of the musician clip.

The teeshirt and the guitar effects look particularly cool. But if you wanted the teeshirt and the guitar to be fully rendered you will need to adjust the variance of the colour selection on the chroma key so that they are not filtered out.

I haven't seen the source clips or the settings you used so I cannot comment more at this point.

FAQ #699: “Is Chroma Key (green/blue screen) supported?”.

On the clip properties screen, it should let you click on the "Chroma Key" effect, and then is should have a color picker, and a variance spinner. Let me know if that works. Good luck.

Hello energy

You need to keep the colour selected for the key as the same as the screen uyou used in the background when you shot the video clip. The screen, whether paper or fabric must be stretched absolutely taught to ensure there are no folds to create shadows, and the lighting needs to be setup so no shadows are cast on the green/blue screen.

Usually this means putting the screening fabric on a stretcher frame and having it located a reasonably long way behind the subject being videoed.

What kind of fabric did you use to build the chroma key background screen to shoot your subject clip?

Hello energy,

I am a little puzzled now.

The clip you show made in Sony Vegas shows appalling bleed effects (ie going in the opposite direction to the problem you have with Chroma Screen in OpenShot.

I know that Sony Vegas can do very good Chroma Key effects.

May I refer you to a definitive reference on this kind of effect?

The reference to learn the theory and practice on special effects is:

"Filming The Fnatastic" by Mark Sawicki, pub; Focal Press, 2007 ISBN 978-0-240-80915-1

This has a long chapter on Chroma Key, and also has some other extremely useful chapters on other professional effects and how to do them on a limited budget.

Postscript from Helen

I just wanted to say that I am impressed with what you have achieved. If you get some good books like the one I referred you to, and study and try the examples, I think you will quickly develop some very good skills in creative video making :-)

Just as a side note: I haven't done tons of testing with the any of the
effects. So, it's possible that for some reason the color you choose is not
being used... or some other bizarre bug is happening. Just keep that in
mind. =)

I will look into this tonight.

Thanks,
-Jonathan

Hello Energy,

Get the book I recommended above.

Also get this book:

"Film Directing Shot by Shot" by Steven D. Katz, pub; Michael Wiese Productions 1991 ISBN 0-941188-10-8

I have watched some more of your videos and I am impressed by both yourself and your sister. I give you both full marks for creative expression and for artistic integraty. :-)

Get the books I suggest and both of you should have wonderful careers ahead of you in the arts. You are both natural born artists. :-)

Best wishes, Helen

Ok, I found a few issues with the chroma key color picker tonight. I've
fixed that issue, and a few other issues surrounding effects. Our PPA
should be udpated soon with the new version (0.9.43). Please update to that
version, and try your chroma key test again. Thanks!

I've been using basic functions to create government meetings but this really helps me understand some real, usable features and done in a way I feel confident I can do. You've taught me a lot. And openshot is pretty amazing for amateur videography.

To perform a chroma key test in OpenShot Video Editor, follow these steps. First, import your background and foreground footage into separate tracks. Then, select the foreground clip, go to the "Properties" tab, and enable the chroma key effect. Adjust the color and tolerance settings until the background is properly removed. Finally, preview and export your edited video.
