How do I actually make a DVD

Asked by Roger Binns

The documentation and interface don't specify how to actually make a DVD. Using the export options results in a VOB file.

Google searches result in all sorts of advice about random programs like Brasero, K3B, dvdauthor, dvdstyler, devede etc but my experience of all of them is that they either crash, whine about the vob file, whine about missing files (ifo/bup etc), try to re-encode the content or don't appear to do anything useful. For example as I write this, devede is outputting a message "WARN: Skipping sector, waiting for first VOBU..." apparently for every "sector" of the vob file.

It would be extremely helpful if there were some simple instructions going from video export in OpenShot to a resulting dvd that just plays (ie no menus or other fancy stuff).

Hi
That's right there is no possibility actually to create directely a DVD, we are going to implement the basic functions. But it is planned and in our todo list (=whitelist).
Personnaly, when i'm creating a DVD, after my vob file, i'm using Devede .It is a great tool, quick , simple and some good quality. I have not some problems like you. I'm using each time the last Getdeb version. And for this utilsation that i done, i choice create DVD after in advanced options create an iso image ready to be burn and in Menu Options i choise at the botton at the part option at the beginning i'm choising : jumping at the first title at the beginning. And tha's all. If i remember me well. there is a moment that i have not done. soon. I'm a big fan of the Police series like the Experts (Miami, Manathan , not las vegas, Mentalist, NSIS, ...) and I'm creating some DVD after working the clip with Openshot. It is not his first utilisation but for cutting the advertising, create a tilte, applied some transitions, Openshot is the best tool that i have use for that than the film provides by a Player/recorder DVD or a DVB-t (like me). And far a way, the only thing that it miss him it is a better precision in the cutting frames.

I did get devede to work in the end, but had to go into the advanced options and set export format to 'dvd' instead of 'vob'.

One possible cause of problems is that installing openshot does not install mjpegtools which includes the mplex command. It looks like mplex must be run at some point to create a correct vob.

I am using the ppa on karmic.

I use DVDstyler (http://www.dvdstyler.de/) as authoring tool. It is a bit complex, but it is by far the most elaborate tool you can dream of for creating DVD. You can program any key of the remote, it will automagically size the project for you, etc, etc.
I frequently make DVD with the following content:
one or two main videos coming from a rewriteable dvd that I recorded of TV
several tidbits flv coming from the net as "bonuses".
Step one: clean the videos by taking out the ads (openshot)
step two: include the videos and the bonuses in a dvdstyler template
step three: let dvd styler do the rest (ie create an iso)
step 4: burn the iso.
DVD styler could actually burn the iso, but I like to stop between each step, ie I have dvd styler create the master, then display for perusal, then I click the continue button to create the iso and then I burn it.
The beauty of dvdstyler is that it will size everything for you.

I usually put between 2 and 3 hours on a 4.7G dvd. The beauty is that once you have included your mpeg or avi or flv in the template, at creation time dvdstyler will automagically resize everything to make sure it fits on a 4.7 DVD (configurable).
Definitely recommended :-)

It depends that you want to realise. If you want to do something like above devede is a great tool and it is a power converter. (Tiens, serais-ce un français ? )
If you want to realise some beautiful DVD with menus, you have a lot of solutions. DVDStyler is being one. Some people have asked me already and I have already too done some answers here : http://openshotusers.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=222&p=821#p821
You have a list of the mainly authoring tools on Linux. After, the choice could be if you want using a simple or an advanced tool.
Personnaly, for me when i want to create a DVD with menus, i'm using 2Mandvd but i have discovered recently Bomobo and it looks interresting. Just for information, it seems that Stephane Gilbault, creator of 2Mandvd and Smile want at least to create one tool which be the fusion of this two wonderful tools.

Can you help with this problem?
