Hi,

Thanks for your interest in Onboard.

Unfortunately, Onboard is not compatible to Wayland and only moderately compatible to GNOME3.

As it was quite difficult, if not impossible, to make Onboard compatible to Wayland and GNOME 3, a rewrite of Onboard was started under the name of OnboardOSK.

However, I don't know at what state the development of OnboardOSK is; I am even wondering whether it is still being developed.

Have a nice day.

PS: As far as I know, the currently official onscreen keyboard of Ubuntu is Caribou. (I am aware, that it does not currently offer all the features Onboard is offering. That's one of the reasons I am still using the Unity desktop on Ubuntu 18.04.)

Thanks,

Tired of the bugs of gdm3 (errors on login and bad keyboard layout
management), I switched back to Unity yesterday. Everything is working
again.

Hi Everyone,

I'm just curious if anyone does know the state of this project. I am not an Ubuntu user but I use onboard (original) on gnome 3 in OpenSuse, despite its imperfect integration. I must stick with Xorg for now to use it, but that's fine.

The lack of a decent split keyboard layout makes the default gnome 3 OSK (Caribou) absolutely useless on larger 2-in-1s for anything other than entering a small handful of characters. I have created a split layout in onboard and this makes a 13" 2-in-1 actually usable in tablet mode.

I sincerely hope this project hasn't died. IMHO, it should replace Caribou as the default OSK in Gnome 3.

Regards,
David
