Word Completion

Asked by dz111222

I can see a list of words in the top bar when operating OnBoard. If an application is open ie Firefox or Libre Writer, the top bar does not show any word choices. Using Ubuntu 14.04 and Linux Mint 17. Thank you.

Hi,

Thanks for your interest in Onboard and sorry for replying so late.

In order to suggest words, Onboard also takes the context where you are typing into account; for example, Onboard distinguishes typing into the terminal from typing into gedit. To do this, it relies on the at-spi2 framework, which is installed by default on Ubuntu and other distributions.

But also the application you are typing into has to make use of at-spi2. Depending on the toolkit used by the application, specific libraries have to be installed for the application to use at-spi2.

By typing the following command in a terminal, you can make sure that the libraries that exist today are installed on your Ubuntu system:
sudo apt-get install libatk-adaptor qt-at-spi libreoffice-gtk libreoffice-gtk3 libatk-wrapper-java

However, please be aware that even with these libraries there are still applications, that don't support at-spi2.

Hoping to have been helpful.

Have a nice day,

Francesco

Hi Francesco,

Thank you for your answer . I completed the installation of the libraries that you mentioned above. I am able to use word selection in terminal and selecting programs within system settings. Word selection did not work in LibreOffice Writer , Firefox or Remmina.
I would like to know how to install libraries in Remmina or Vinagre so they can use at-spi2 , these are ( Remmina and Vinagre) the main applications in which I need word selection.
On Board is really nice , its interface , features etc. . I just need it to do word selection in my remote dektop applications.

Best,

Daniel

Hi,

We are glad that you like Onboard.

Actually libreoffice-gtk libreoffice-gtk3 should have taken care of making word completion work; but it does not work in LibreOffice on my Ubuntu utopic system either. There is probably a bug somewhere.

The libatk-adaptor library should make word suggestion work with the mozilla application, particularly firefox. It is working here in the google search box, in form fields, but not in the URL bar. But I think that the URL bar is a special case because it offers suggestions by itself.

Concerning Remmina and Vinagre: Did you try to look up whether these applications are supposed to support at-spi2? If they are, the problem might only be a bug. If at-spi2 support has not been implemented, you might contact the developers and ask them to add it.

Cheers,

Francesco
