xubuntu 7.10 media playback of CD's & DVD's
Hello all.
Please help - I am trying to escape and break free from Camp Redmond.
I have Xubuntu 7.10 installed on a Compaq Armada M300 (CPU 333MHz -10G/byte HDD - 128M/byte RAM) and I want to use it purely for listening to CD's & MP3's, watching DVD's, and organizing my digital photos when I am away from home/office.
Below is a list of what I have done so far:-
1. I have installed the files from the Medibutu repositry
2. I have installed the Ubuntu plugin files
3. I have installed the Libdvdcss file(s) - (to watch DVD's through Totem via Sarge 3.1 I just installed Libdvdcss and that was it!)
This is my problem(s):-
1. Medibuntu no longer supports 7.10 - (is it ok to use the newer ones? - if "no" is there another link?*
2. The Ubuntu plugin files are/were for Ubuntu 8.10*
3. When I play a DVD through Totem, I get a message saying that it cannot locate the files needed to play '[<mydvds>]'.
4. When I play a CD, Totem only plays the first track, (even though it displays the total number of tracks on the disc), I cannot advance to a track of my choice.
5. I do not have a 'wired' internet connection. So to get round the issue of installing the files from the first list was to download the files to a USB pendrive and copy them to my home folder and the extract from there. Is this ok?.
* upon installing Xubutu 7.10 did say the dependences are/were or not satisfied - I could not install the 'not satisfied' ones.
Ubuntu 7.04/7.10 seems to take forever to get to the login screen (two & half minutes) and anything above Xubuntu 7.10 is the same. DVD playback is very choppy under Ubuntu 7.04/7.10, (DMA was enabled), Sarge 3.1 was fine, (so too is Windows 9x, 2Kpro & XPpro).
