Are scheduled backups only available for the default profile?

Yes, this is indeed by design: Currently it is only possible to set a single crontab/anachron entry for nssbackup. This entry executes nssbackup which in turn processes all active profiles. Therefore it is not possible to specify distinct schedules for profiles separately.
