So the problem isn't that you can't install Ubuntu; it's that you have no mouse pointer?
Can you restore the mouse pointer by switching to a terminal and back, i.e. by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F6, then Ctrl+Alt+F7?
And as a handy bit of info for future installations, you probably could have saved yourself all that downloading and burning by checking the hash and verifying the disc.

Retrieving the password.
https:/

You wont see anything when typing a password in a terminal.
https:/

There is no mouse pointer in a terminal (it's not a GUI (graphical interface), but there should be a cursor (blinking).
https:/
> i use the same password for everything
Which isn't btw. a good idea, if that means really *for everything*.
However, usually the password you setup during installation is the same which you login and for terminal usage, e.g. administration.

Jeff,
since you now managed to install netbook and in addition there is a duplicate question open
https:/
I'd suggest to open a new question about synaptics touchpad issue.
This will make it much easier for others to follow which might have the same issue, thanks.
Please also respect the request from Marco not to reply via mail to Launchpad, because the answer gets unreadable and uneasy to follow for others, thanks.
