Why does some software not show up after installation?

I already got the problem several times, when trying to install apps that are not getting any support by cannonical - mainly with the programs 7zip and RAR. After I install them from the software center they're shown as installed, but nowhere to be seen in the main menu, neither I can use them to open files they're needed for, as they're not showing up in the "open with" list either.

Even when properly installed, not every program appears in the main menu; only programs with a graphical user interface (GUI) will appear there, and the Netbook Remix also hides a few too (presumably to avoid clutter on small screens).
7zip and RAR are not GUI programs; instead they add functionality to Archive Manager. So when you right click a .7z or .rar file, they don't appear as separate entries because Open with Archive Manager (the default action) should now work by calling on the new programs in the background.

Archive Manager can be made to appear in the main menu if you want it there. To do that:
In the main menu, go to System > Main Menu;
When the menu editor opens, click Accessories in the left pane;
You should see Archive Manager at the top of the right pane with an empty checkbox by it. Tick the box.
Archive Manager will now appear in the Accessories submenu.
