Review of sorting mechanism in Machine Tracker needed ?

Asked by Gro-Anita Vindheim

I got a question from one of the NAV users today:
Why does Machine Tracker-> IP search order by mac address?
It is difficult to find the time period in question, since Machine Tracker - IP search sorts by mac, then start time.

I would like the NAV developer team to consider changing the result view of MT-IP, so that the end user can:
1. search for IP
2. find the time period
3. find the mac address

Search for mac and swport should also be reviewed.

I think your question and followup suggestion has merit. I would rather that you ask this on the nav-users mailing list, though, since it could use wider discussion.

To answer your question, machine trackers orders IP search results by ip, mac and time. The rationale for this is to group entries for identical ip/mac pairs, reducing the amount of textual clutter in the results. It has been this way since the dawn of NAV, which is why I'd rather discuss suggestions for change on the mailing list.

Can you help with this problem?
