Can Mixxx be upgraded in place?

When upgrading between different builds of Mixxx 2.1 alpha, is it necessary or recommended to uninstall the previous version? Also, does the local data need to be cleared?

It is not required to uninstall and clear the user data.
But since it is a untested alpha version, you should backup your userdata first.

To get around it, I have my productive set of user data in an extra folder
Mixxx can directly use it by starting it with
mixxx --settingsPath path
