Problem due to duplicate [weak] channels

Asked by steve davis

I've just started using MeTV and think its brilliant, however I had an initial problem which may be of interest to other newbies like me.
Luckily, the first time I ran MeTV I interrupted the scanning process mid-way through and it worked fine. I then configured it for a 2nd user and let it do a complete scan. This time each channel was severely pixelated and unusable.
Eventually I worked out that I had duplicate channels, and that when I selected (say) "BBC3", MeTV always selected the 2nd one listed, which was coming from a weak transmitter.
The solution was to open the "channels.conf" file with a text editor and rename any dupes, so all channels were unique (e.g. "BBC3" > "BBC3a"). This allows you to correctly select and identify the weak stations so they can be deleted from channels.conf.
So my suggestion for an enhancement would be to create a right-click pop-up menu which includes the options "Remove" and "Rename" for the currently selected channel.

Hi Steve,

Very glad that you like Me TV, also very impressed that you managed to work that out without any help.

We've started development on the next series of Me TV (0.6) which has a channel editor built into it. I think at this point it's a bit late to put this into 0.5 although it is an excellent idea.

In Australia, I have the same issue with ABC. At the moment, I've just ignored the second channel to avoid confusion but I think that ultimately, I will have to implement a renaming algorithm that does the "ABC 1" -> "ABC 1 (2)" automatically, if that makes sense. What do you think?

Thanks,

Michael

Michael,
I think you said somewhere that one of your objectives was to produce an application that your wife was happy using. Having recently converted the family computer from Windows to Ubuntu, I'm still dealing with the fall-out. So yes I think your auto solution would be something they could cope with.

There seems to be some great software coming out of Oz at the moment (MeTV, Puppy Linux)...what to you credit this to, the sunshine or the beer?

Steve
