LTSP client authenticates but logs out immediately

I have installed LTSP on a 64 bit server, and built the 32bit client system without issues. My terminals boot up, and I can login, but the session terminates within a couple of seconds after the 'verifying password, please wait' message.

The only change I can remember making to the system is changing the dhcp.conf ip addresses from 192.168.0.* to 192.168.1.* . Afterwards I ran the "sudo ltsp-update-sshkeys" then "ltsp-update-image -a i386". There are a couple of errors in the auth.log (below) which are received regardless of user.

One symptom I should mention is that after attempting to log in the display on my server starts to distort and break up. The only way to rectify the screen problem is to press 'CTRL'+ 'ALT' + 'F1' to revert to cli then 'CTRL'+ 'ALT' + 'F7'. I tried logging into a client with two separate users as to ensure it wasn't a problem with having the same user logged in twice.

Okay so I can now confirm that this bug affects only 32bit clients operating off a 64bit servers. My 64bit laptop will PXE boot and login without issues. It is just the 32bit clients who fail. I have attached the auth.log showing an unsuccessful attempt to log on to a 32bit, followed by the successful 64bit log on.

Its about 9:45 am here now (I'm in North Sumatra) so have an entire day to get more information on this to help get a fix. I have a 32bit and 64bit client setup and am willing to do anything I can to help but I just don't know enough to progress on my own. If I don't get a response soon though I will have to format the server and install a 32bit server which is obviously not ideal as more and more LTSP clients will be 64bit in the future.

I have chroot and am doing another apt-get update, but seeing as I had a similar issue on 9.10 as well, I am sure this is a bug in LTSP or Ubuntu. The last time I logged in I got all the way to seeing icons on the desktop before it killed the connection.

*** If I run "ltsp-update-sshkeys" on the server does it update all the chroot environments??? Or just the default?

e.g. This is a 64bit server so does "ltsp-update-sshkeys" just update the 64bit client? There is no "-a i386" command line arg like with "ltsp-update-image -a i386". Just a thought as it appears the ssh connection is being prematurely cut off (even though it loads the desktop icons first). ***

Could it be a compiz issue:

Try this as per help from #ltsp channel angels ;) I tried this solution, and it worked for me.

Just disable compiz for all users.

Hi Shrenik,

Thanks that solved the issue. Some developer did give me the same fix when I raised a bug but he didn't explain it was a compiz issue. Thanks for the extra info, I have now removed compiz as well.

I need help :(
I think I have the same problem but sometimes only!
If I try to log on I hear the Ubuntu-Sounds but the screen is black and I will be back in the log on screen...
I don't know the reason but I think It's a problem with my 64-bit-server und the 32-bit-clients...
The solution from Shrenik doesn't work because I can't find the files (no such file found).
My Ubuntu version: Lucid Lynx 10.04 Server
