Interoperability with commercial Modbus products ?

Asked by Sven Crouse

Hi libmodbus group. New to Modbus and automation in general, but I'm looking at this library with ideas for some higher-level tools to do remote switching/control. I'm wondering if those on list have any experience with how this library works with existing commercial Modbus couplers like those from Beckhoff, WAGO, etc. ? In other words, is Modbus = Modbus such that I should be able interface PC with RS-xxx and commercial Modbus coupler without too much pain ?

Appreciatively,

Sven

Yes, the protocol doesn't depend on proprietary extensions and must works with all Modbus devices.

Hi Sven,

I have successfully used libmodbus to do the kind of interface you require through RS-485. I am using a B&B optically Isolated RS-232 (PC end) to RS-485 (device end) converter. I haven't used the couplers you mentioned, but I understand that the library follows the Modbus specification, and I would think it will work.

You can run a couple of tests with the master-slave example programs included with libmodbus.

Thanks for the reply Jesus. Based on success reports like yours I've
ordered some equipment.

Thanks Stéphane. I've just ordered some modbus equipment. I will
report my findings to list when operational.
