Privacy Policy

Asked by Hagy Hag

I am concerned that every bug I report etc. on Launchpad is fully indexed via Google and I don't find any Launchpad privacy policy regarding personal data.

I find it also a security vulnerability when externals can easily find out what application software I am running etc. etc. My desktop is part of my personal sphere and protected as such by law. Of course you can avoid to report bugs etc but that is not the problem. The problem is in fact that there is absolutely no need to open the doors voluntarily. I don't think a real name policy is anything but userfriendly in terms of privacy protection.

Hi Karsten,

I want to understand your concerns. Please explain exactly what you mean when you say "My desktop is part of my personal sphere and protected as such by law". How is Launchpad affecting the privacy of your own computer desktop?

I've started the process to get a policy written up for us. Thanks for reminding us of how important that is.

I'm not sure what you mean by "externals can easily find what application software I am running". If you don't want to submit your own bug reports or crash reports, then I confirm you shouldn't!

I'm not sure I know what you mean by "real name policy". We request that people signing up for the beta test team sign up using their real names, but other than that we are pretty lenient about what name you choose to use. And you can use abbreviations if you like!

Hi Karsten,

What's the advert for Black and Oolong Chai Tea all about?

Anyway, it's important that people using Google can find pages in Launchpad that contain bugs. That's the whole point of having a public bug tracker.

Please tell me what is wrong with entering your name into google, and then finding bugs you reported. You have said that it occurs, and I agree with you that it occurs. You need to explain what the problem is.

For instance:

When externals know what software you are using you can be traced by companies looking for patent infringers.
When externals know what tools you use, they can perform an attack on your machine and exploit known security holes etc. It is a
security risk.
Externals can easily classify you by looking at your desktop.
