Are other project types than software allowed?

Asked by Anders Feder

Can only free software projects be hosted in Launchpad? How about open source hardware or other forms of 'open' projects? Specifically, we're considering using Launchpad as a general collaborative tool for the open source lunar mission Team FREDNET.

Thanks,
Anders Feder

Normally, Launchpad is for software, but in some cases, it is appropriate to host documentation projects that are licensed under a free license that meets the Launchpad licensing guidelines. I think that your project would be very welcome on Launchpad. If you need help reviewing the license feel free to ask for it here.

Team FREDNET is a competitor in the Google Lunar X PRIZE contest to land a robotic rover on the surface of the Moon. Uniquely, our mission is open source, meaning that all design documentation is made available under a standard open source, such as the GPL (the exact choice of license is still to be made).

Some of the things we will need to develop are the actual spacecraft (transit vehicle and rover) and communications systems. All schematics etc. for these hardware systems will be open source. We also have other miscellaneous tasks such as outreach, surveys of the space environment, raising funds etc.

The bug and blueprint tracking features of Launchpad could quite easily be adapted to our general needs, and would be very useful to us as our team consists of international, widely geographically dispersed contributors. We currently coordinate work through wiki and forums, but it is becoming slightly unwieldy as the work load and number of contributors increase.

For an impression of our current organization and what type of project we are, please see: http://wiki.xprize.frednet.org/index.php/TeamFrednetWiki:Community_Portal

Go ahead and create the project. It would be great to have in on Launchpad.

Thank you. Can I ask you to set up a superproject (named e.g. "frednet") for the purpose, so we can organize our subprojects under it?

Anders, before we start creating a super-project, I just want to make sure you have a real reason to set up a super project. Do you have a plan on what sub projects you want to create?

If you do, my idea is that you go ahead and create them and then give us project names so we can create a super project for you and include those projects in.

[For some reason, I was not notified by e-mail of Данило Шеган's response to this question]

We do not have a complete plan yet, no. Currently, we have set up this subproject:
https://edge.launchpad.net/frednet-fredweb

But we can wait, of course, until we have more complete set of subprojects, if that's more appropriate.

Anders,

By your last comment, I'm assuming you are happy with the current solution for your request. Feel free to require a project group when you have a plan for it.

Thanks.
