Edit feature is missing from comment section of bug reports, why?

Asked by Jussi

Sometimes you accidentally send wrong information on comments, but you can't edit the information. Instead you have to send new message to correct the information. This creates unnecessary mess.

And sometimes this isn't even enough. Example when you reply to bug report via email and thus you accidentally publish all the email addresses, there is no way to take them off anymore (real life example https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/boinc/+bug/1274456 ).

Why such basic feature is missing?

There is a "Hide Comment" feature that effectively remove the comment from view for everybody.

That's bug #80895. There's no easy solution -- there must be a balance between allowing people to correct mistakes and not allowing people to make misleading changes to history. Additionally, bug comments often go to mailing lists, so editing out the confidential data on Launchpad's end won't remove it from everyone's inboxes, or from the public mailing list archives.
