Hi Usama Akkad,
The „Arabic Language Translation Team” is not a real translation team as it does not belongs to any translation group and it is not appointed for translating into Arabic.
In Launchpad everyone is free to create as many teams as they want. This should be a good thing, but in the translation cause it is somehow misleading as someone can create a bogus translation team like https:/
You can find out more about Launchpad Translations and how translation teams works here:
help.launchpad.
-------
There is an active Ubuntu Arabic Translation team https:/
Please read those instruction or contact the Ubuntu Arabic Translation team https:/
Cheers

thank you,
I know of the closed translation team for Ubuntu.
but I thought of using launchpad for many other programs. I'm the current coordinator of the Arabic translation in TranslationProj
I thought I could use launchpad to do the translation as it is much easier for translators.
the ~arabic team has already many members and it carry the name of our language and some team members have mentioned that there is no activity there.
if it's better I could just start new team and start translating there.

Hi,
Beside the Ubuntu Translation Group, we also have the Launchpad Translation group which is an all purpose translation group https:/
Currently the Launchpad Translation Group has 23 established teams and 151 projects are using it.
You can find more information about the Launchpad Translation group here:
https:/
For Launchpad Translation teams, we ask for each team to use the following name convention „lp-l10n-LC” , where LC is the language code.
We could ask the Launchpad Admin to make you the owner of ~arabic team and then rename it to ~lp-l10n-ar, but I think that it will be easier if you read the instruction for creating a new translation team and then evaluate each member prior of adding him/her to the team.
The translation teams have full control over the translation of their appointed language, and since the ~arabic team is an open team, anyone can join even of they don't know that language.
If you have any other questions, or something is not clear, please let us know.
Cheers,
Adi

Usama,
We'd be happy to appoint the Arabic team for the Launchpad Translations group, as the group has been missing the language for too long.
However, we do have a policy for teams in the Launchpad Translations group, and at the bare minimum that requires the team to be named lp-l10n-ar, be a Moderated or Restricted team, have some useful information on the purpose and how to join the team on the Launchpad page, and have translation guidelines.
Apart from the translation guidelines, all other steps should not take more than a few minutes to complete, and if you could look into that, I'd be happy to appoint the team after you've set that up.
A final point is also that there are currently 3 Arabic teams, none of which can do translations unless appointed in the Launchpad Translators group. If you could look into merge them all into a single one, that would be great:

I've just noticed that there is yet another Arabic translation team. The current list is:
https:/
https:/
https:/
https:/
It would be good if someone would lead an effort to talk to all different teams and consolidate into a single one which we can appoint for Arabic translations in Launchpad.

Hi all,
Merging them, it's good idea.
Then: https:/
I would suggest 2 groups:
https:/
Another one for collecting new translators to keep an eye on them. Adding them to the official team whenever they are ready.
https:/
Use of a single mailing list may be good also.

No team was appointed for Arabic translations in the Launchpad
Translators group, but there are several existing teams.
What we are trying to sort out is how to eventually unify those teams
and allow translating into Arabic all Launchpad projects that use the
Launchpad Translators group.

David.

Launchpad has got a concept of translation groups. These are collections
of translation teams -one per language- appointed as responsible for the
translation of a given project.
The two biggest translation groups in Launchpad are:
* The Ubuntu Translators group - a list of language teams
responsible for the translation of Ubuntu
(https:/
* The Launchpad Translators group - a list of language teams
responsible for the translation of Launchpad-hosted projects
(https:/
So to answer the question: yes, these are different translation groups.
However, quite often there are the same people in both groups. Some
teams have got an umbrella team for Launchpad translations of which the
Ubuntu one is a subteam.

As I said, there is no group appointed for Arabic translation in
Launchpad translators, and several teams which have effectively no
translation capability because of that.
That's the only issue we're discussing here: how these several teams can
best work together in a single one, which can be appointed as
responsible for the translation of Arabic applications in Launchpad.
So what I'd recommend is that someone in the Arabic translation
community takes the lead in getting in touch with all these groups and
thinks about how to bets join efforts.
Regards,
David.

I've had yet another request today to translate applicatons into Arabic in Launchpad, which has prompted me to revive this support request.
To summarize:
* There are four different teams of people who want to translate into Arabic in Launchpad:
* https:/
* https:/
* https:/
* https:/
* None of these teams can actually do translations, as they are not part of the Launchpad Translators group (https:/
* It would be awesome if someone would lead an effort to talk to all different teams and merge them into a single one which we can appoint for Arabic translations in Launchpad. The appointment process is simple, and can be done in a matter of minutes -> https:/
Would someone volunteer for doing that?
Thanks!

Hi Usama,
Thanks for contacting me and bringing me to this thread. I wasn't aware of this discussion.
I did some translations back in the day when the group was created, but I am no longer active on Launchpad. I'd be happy to assist with transferring group ownership and any other changes to create an official Arabic translation team for Launchpad.
Please advise how I shall proceed. Alternatively, I give the admins my consent to amend the group as they see fit.
I am thrilled to see someone willing to take the lead on this, and you have my full support.
Cheers,
TAA

The lp-l10n-ar team seems to meet the naming policy, I've no problem with adding any other interested members to the team or even handing ownership to Usama or anyone else interested.
