Adding a new email to my account gives problem with a group I own

Asked by SirVer

I wanted to add a second Email address to my account, but I always get the following error:
The email address '<removed for privacy>' is already registered to Widelands Developers. If you think that is a duplicated account, you can merge it into your account.

I own the team Widelands Developers and I couldn't find where I could change this email address for this group (the group has a mailinglist that is perfectly fine as a contact email address).

You cannot change an email address once it is given to a team, even if you choose to deactivate it, it is still attached to a team can cannot be removed,

Can you confirm that the https://launchpad.net/~widelands-dev should have no email address so that an admin can delete them.

I do not know the implications. Do I loose control over the team if it does not have an email attached to it anymore? I worked around this issue by using my other email address for bzr commiter (otherwise I am always listed as Widelands Developers instead of my Real Name). But it is likely that we will need more teams for widelands: One for translations, maybe one for bug tracking. Do I really need a new email adress for each of them? Why can't I use the same for more than one team/account?

Teams do not need email addresses. Given that you cannot remove an email address, I do not think it wise to ever give a team an email address.

Curtis, this should made be explicit anywhere then, shouldn't it? Why can teams be given email addresses in the first place? Could you please remove my Email address from Widelands developers then?

I have assigned the question to an admin, the only person who can delete an email address from the database.

There are legitimate reasons to give an email address to a team, and certainly necessary before launchpad supported mailing lists. The problem is that email addresses cannot ever be reused by another person...this prevents someone from taking control of your account if you loose access to your email address, but this also applies to teams. This is intrinsically flawed because obviously some person really does control the email address besides the team.

This situation would be less painful if launchpad showed all the deactivate email addresses to make it clear the email address is permantely asssociated with the person or team. I do think teams should be able to remove the address permanently since no-one can login as a team anyway.
