create/print dimensioned shapes

Asked by bill2009

I'd like to use inkscape to create and print precisely sized shapes. I tried setting a page ruler to inches and made a circle 3 inches across but when I printed it it was rather smaller. I've tried a laserjet 1012 and another HP printer.

What am I missing?

You could calibrate the rulers to fit actual size of print. It can be acheived through File ~> Inkscape Preferences ~> Interface. At right you will see some options and in the bottom - the ruler. Adjust the slider.

Thanks for replying. This sounds like what I want. I am using Inkscape 0.46 and the file-inkscape preferences screen doesn't have an "interfaces" section or anything similar sounding. I looked at all the submenus but I didn't see any adjustable ruler..

Hi again.

Bill, I'm strongly advise you to switch on 0.46dev or pre0.47 version,
'cause they're really more stable than 'stable' 0.46!

Sorry, I dunno which OS do you use, but from advertisment in the end
of your letter - it is Windows. So you have alternatives -
http://tinyurl.com/lfhkd - the 0.46dev builds. And the official
Sourceforge site http://tinyurl.com/nqfa3k .

If it helps you - please, mark the answer as Solved.

Bill, if I understood correctly, following Oleg advice won't give you any results as the ruler calibration he is referring to only affects how the objects are displayed on your screen at 100% zoom, but it has no effect on how objects are printed. If you draw a 3x3 inches circle using page rulers as reference it should print at that size.

I think the problem lays at the printing process. You'll have to tell us what operating system you use. In th meanwhile try to export a PDF and print it from other software like Acrobat Reader or FoxIt. Make sure there are no "fit to margins" or similar options activated, check also that the printing will be done at 100%.

Can you help with this problem?
