how do I change the lineweight?

when drawing biezer curves the lines are too thick. how can I change them so that it is a finer line?

You could set your own style for bezier:

1. draw line, then set desirable fill and stroke color and width. Select your line
2. File-Inkscape Preferences-Pen - press the button 'Take from selection'

that's all. all your lines will be have the values that you set there.
