How many colours has my drawing got?

Asked by Robin

I'm reading about pngcrush and realise I don't know how many colours my Inkscape drawing has in it!! I can't see where I can find this information out. Can anyone help? Also there are references to "dithering to 256 colours". How can I accomplish this (assuming my drawings have more than 256).

Thanks

Robin

A PNG file exported from Inkscape will almost certainly have more than 256 colours, because of the colours used for antialiasing. If you want, you can find the exact number of colours using ImageMagick (identify -verbose filename.png).

You can dither to 256 colours using the GIMP: change the image mode to "Indexed", which will bring up a dialog with dithering options (normal Floyd-Steinberg dithering with an optimized palette should be OK). It's probably best to remove any transparency before doing this.

... ps I object to being quoted as saying "Thanks, that solved my question."! ;) Questions can only be answered, not solved! LoL,

So: Thanks sas you both solved my problem and answered my question ... elegantly :)
