Page set up with margins and guides in Inkscape 0.46

Asked by Colin

I'd like to setup page margins and guides from document properties. As a professional graphic designer, I also need the option of adding bleeds and slugs. This is available and quickly setup in Corel, Indesign etc and I'd like a default page to be made available with say 10mm margins and an option for an additional 3mm bleed with guides showing this.
Can you help, it's the only thing preventing me using Inkscape more often as page setup is too slow. Otherwise a fully featured program that excels.

Is there going to support for Pantone spot colours?

Colin

I don't know whether this is what you need:
1. Set up the guides and save the empty document as an Inkscape SVG.
2. Put this file in the template folder: [Inkscape installation folder]\share\templates\ on Windows, [your home dir]/.inkscape/templates/ on Linux (and probably MacOS, but I'm not sure). You can also delete stuff you don't need from there.
3. This file will now show up in the File > New menu, which shows available templates.

If I correctly understand what a bleed is, I think you can achieve the same effect by applying a rectangular clipping mask on all the objects on the page. I don't know what a slug is (the Wikipedia article doesn't give me sufficient insight).
As for the Pantone colors, there are two issues:
* SVG stores colors in the RGB colorspace only.
* If you want to use Pantone colors and call them Pantone, you need to buy a license, so they probably can't be supported in open source software - read more here: http://www.linux.com/articles/49236

There is certainly going to be better support for CMYK, HSL and Lab colorspaces at some point, but I can't say when will this happen.

Hi Just downloaded Inkscape--it is brilliant--how do I set up a page which is A4 so that it comes up every time I go to do some art work?? I am used to using Corel12 and design business cards and bookmarks, generally I set up 10 cards, 90 X 55mm per A4 sheet when I do 'short run' prints.

Thanks in advance

Michael

All the templates that are used in inkscape are in the following directory:

<your inkscape directory>/share/templates

the inkscape directory varies accoding to OS, etc...

the default.svg in there is the template that is used every time you start
up inkscape. so edit it, add your guides, change the size of the document
etc, then save it.

hope this helps,
ryanlerch

Hi Ryan,

Managed to set up my page thanks to your advice!! In Corel there are
many images available for back grounds, are there such images for
backgrounds etc available for Inkscape??

Just love the program--how do pay for the book on Inkscape which I
would like to buy?? Is it in Australia ??I live in Brisbane.

Stay well

Michael

Hi Ryan,

In Corel when one goes to 'Text' a box comes up giving you 'Insert Character' does Inkscape has this ability?? Cannot seem to find this in Inkscape. Loving the program-- Michael
