Special characters

I want to insert a special character and start with a standard character. After that I select the special character and click "add", but the only thing that happens is that the first character moves to the left and my special character does not appear.

What kind of font do you use?

The font I used was Arial Unicode MS and I wanted to insert an arrow. But after a re-install of Inkscape the issue was solved.
