how to make background transparent

Asked by Carol Blair

I am very new to Inkscape. I am not a computer wiz. I need things to be simple and straight forward.

I am trying to create an ad for a publication. I used "cut and paste" to bring in some text in a font that is not available in Inkscape. My problem is that now I have white space surrounding the text. The graphic I cut and pasted from the same source has a transparent background. How do I make that surrounding area transparent so I can lay my text over a colored area?
Thanks!

If the surrounding area is a white rectangle, then you copied an image. This is seldom a good idea to use images for text. But if you really must then use eg GIMP to make the background of image transparent. To do so open the image in GIMP, on layer (in layer manager dialog) right click and pick "Add alpha channel". Then select all white areas and press delete button on your keyboard. Now save the file either to PNG or TIFF format, these can handle transparency. Now import your image into Inkscape.

Can you help with this problem?
