How to import a PDF through linking?

Asked by Jonas Olson

How do I import a PDF (say, "subfigure.pdf") into an Inkskape file (say, "figure.svg") through linking, rather than embedding?

I would find it very useful to be able to modify "subfigure.pdf" and then run make to regenerate the final product "figure.pdf" with "inkscape --export-pdf=figure.pdf figure.svg". I already do the same thing with imported PNGs.

(At the same time, I'm naively hoping that this would also solve two font problems with imported PDFs: (1) The information about what characters should be in italics is lost. (2) If Inkscape doesn't find the font used by the text in the imported file, another font is used instead.)

I suppose your pdf comes from another source (otherwise it would be stupid to use PDF here instead of SVG). You could try making a script which imports the pdf and saves as SVG file, maybe you can link it then?

Can you help with this problem?
