slow response to various functions

Asked by jeth

After several decent experiments, during which I learned quite a bit abut the program, I began to encounter extreme slowdowns for certain operations. It wasn't associated with any specific object I was working on.

One such example: if a copy using Ctrl/C-Ctrl/V. The copy left the program active, but the paste took over five minutes, and any attempt to do anything at all on the InkScape program resulted in a "Not Responding" message on the title bar.

Until the problem cleared up, I couldn't even do anything else with other open applications or even start the Task Manager. The keystrokes to start the task manager or open the Windows menu were saved, and they came up once the paste was completed.

Hopefully tomorrow I can update my Linux partition and try the program there to see if I encounter anything similar.

Please, provide Inkscape and Windows version.

Does it happen with any object (even simple ones) or complex objects (path with hundreds or thousand nodes, filters, complex live path effects...)?

Thanks for response,

All were simple operations involving a single object, no special effects.

I'm running Windows Vista with latest service pack and other periodic updates.. Inkscape is 0.48, just recently downloaded and installed.

Although the problem was repeatable to some degree, I have also noticed similar slowdowns with other apps when I click on something and then click again before the first operation is finished. I then see the "not responding" message on the title bar and also have to wait a considerable time before I can do anything again.

Since it even prevents the task manager from coming up until the operation is completed, the problem may well be outside any specific app, and instead in Windows itself.

That's why I want to load up a current Ubuntu in another partition and seen if I can get a failure there.

What are the the specifications of your computer (RAM, CPU, etc)?

There is Inkscape 0.48.1, I don't know if it will help

Windows sometimes decides that a software is locked when in fact is just taking too long processing something; I'm using windows 7 and it happens here too. We have to find out if indeed this is a problem in Windows not being very smart detecting a locked application or if underneath there's a legitimate bug in Inkscape.

Meanwhile, try to detect which operations might trigger it. Since you said that "the problem was repeatable" try to detail as exactly as you can what were you doing.
