How do I crop an object

I just want to crop an object from one side or the other and also remove a square shaped corner of an object

you can select the portion of the object and then click delete.....

Exactly how to select a *portion* of an object? Clicking any part of the object with the "selector tool" selects the entire object, not the desired portion. TIA!

I to would like to know where in the program inkscape can you crop an object or part of what ever you are working on

Hello,

You can either use the eraser tool (destructive, see http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL_v16/html/Eraser.html) or set a clip on the part of the object you want to keep (non destructive, see http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL_v16/html/Clip.html).
