trace bitmap not working

I open the trace bitmap and select my settings. After I click update, there is no preview and if I click ok, the grey trace bitmap title at the top of the dialog box flashes.

Hello,

It appears you may not have an image selected before opening the >Path >Trace Bitmap... Dialog. Make sure you are in the selector tool (F1 or spacebar) and have clicked the image.. The Notification Display (bottom center of the inkscape UI) will display:
"Image 123 x 456; ...."

If that is not the issue, note that there are TWO panels for the MODE tab of the Trace Bitmap Dialog.
~Single Scan:
  >Brightness cutoff
  >Edge detection
  >Color quantization
&
~Multiple scans:
  >Brightness steps
  >Colors
  >Grays

Toggle the radio button to select each of the Scan modes (6 total) and then click the UPDATE button of the Preview panel after selecting each of the radio buttons. Chances are the Brightness Cutoff and Steps may not be setup to render any tracing. But I dought all 6 variants of the trace mode do not give you some type of tracing function..
