Hardware Acceleration in Inkscape. July 2010.

I am on 64bit Ubuntu Lynx with a Phenom II x6 1090T
Inkscape 0.47doesn't seem to be too quick once a heavy layer is added. Clearly I can speed things up by turning off the heavy layer but that isn't always preferred.
thus considering upgrading graphics card. Does Inkscape 0.47 now use hardware acceleration?
Will Inkscape use hardware acceleration by default?
